Biography
Aideen
Barry was born in Cork in 1979. She recently completed and MA in Visual Art
Practices at Dun Laoighre Institute of Art and Design Technology. In 2002 she
received the Hewlett Packard award for her 2002 Degree shown when she graduated
with distinction from the Galway Mayo Institiute of Technology. She has just
been awarded the Tyrone Guthrie award for 2007 and has recently received
the experimental film at the Silent Light Super 8 film festival in Cork in
October 2006. In 2003 she had her first international solo show in The Centre
Cultural in Paris for “Bloomsday”. Her work “The Futility of Conveying Emotion”
has been shown in Paris, Lorient, London and Shanghai. In 2004 she received the
top prize at The Claremorris Open, which was adjudicated by David Thorpe of the
2004 Turner Prize. In 2005 Barry represented Irish Contemporary Performance as
she was invited to partake in Cork 2005, The European Capital of Culture. Her
work is a part of the Galway County Council Collection, The Office of
Public Works and the Irish Consulate offices in Shanghai, China.
She
recently showed in the 2006 Kilkenny Arts Festival, Tulca Season of Visual Art
and the 2006 Dublin Fringe Festival and Studio Six Temple Bar Gallery and
Studios.
Barry will
take up a two-month residency at the Banff Centre in Canada in March of this
year. She will also undertake a residency in Reykjavik in Iceland in May and
will be the artist in residence for Cavan with an exhibition in Cavan county
museum in September 2007. She exhibits in the Mermaid Arts Centre, Drogheda
Arts Centre, and The Fenton Gallery in 2007.
She is a
Board member of “House Projects” (an Artist led initiative), a Director of The
Galway Civic Trust, a Director of the new G126 Gallery in Galway. Barry is a
guest resident at Artspace Studios. She has just been appointed as
the West of Ireland Representative for the Visual Artists Ireland and will be a
frequent writer for the newsletter and website. Aideen Barry lives in County
Galway in the west of Ireland.
