DESIGNING CITIES. Introduction.

A forum on the Value of Urban Design.

The National Sculpture Factory and Cork Midsummer Festival are delighted to welcome you to Designing Cities: The Value of Urban Design. This forum aims to present the current themes and latest thinking on urban design and planning, exploring these within an Irish context. It will assess the value of urban design and the role of innovative and exciting architecture in creating intelligent cities, which provide economic, social, environmental and cultural benefits for all their diverse users. It is widely recognised that the development of Ireland's cities and urban spaces is taking place at an accelerated pace with architects, engineers, town planners and developers facing significant challenges in meeting the present needs for redevelopment, regeneration and expansion. The forum will explore the challenges of the future and consider the success of urban developments at home and abroad, helping to ensure that Ireland develops a vision of the highest standard for its new cityscapes from the buildings to the spaces between them. By inviting speakers who represent the many stakeholders involved in designing cities, and offering the opportunity for similar stakeholders from across Ireland to come together for such an event, we hope that a valuable debate will be stimulated, encouraging an increasing awareness and appreciation of the importance of good design in architecture and the built environment. We are extremely grateful to all the speakers and panellists who have generously agreed to participate and have shown such commitment and enthusiasm in the development of today's event. We would also like to extend our thanks to all the delegates; your presence and involvement will help ensure the success of these proceedings. The expertise and encouragement of all those involved in the consultation process in developing the programme for today has been invaluable. We would also like to acknowledge the support of Cork Corporation for making it possible and hosting the event in its new Millennium Hall.
